Why Plastic?

The Case for Plastic Pallets

While wood pallets dominate the market by volume, plastic pallets have carved out a critical niche in industries where hygiene, consistency, and total cost of ownership matter most. A single plastic pallet can replace 15 to 20 wood pallets over its lifetime, making the higher upfront investment pay for itself many times over.

Plastic pallets are immune to moisture, insects, mold, and bacteria. They do not require ISPM-15 heat treatment for international shipping. They weigh 30-50% less than wood equivalents, reducing freight costs on every load. And when they finally reach the end of their useful life, they are 100% recyclable into new plastic products.

At USA Pallet Recycle, we stock a range of plastic pallet types and can source specialty configurations for any application. Whether you need 50 nestable export pallets or 5,000 rackable pallets for a new distribution center, we have the supply chain relationships to deliver.

Materials Deep Dive

HDPE vs. Polypropylene vs. Recycled Blend

The resin material determines a plastic pallet's temperature performance, chemical resistance, weight, cost, and regulatory compliance. Here is a detailed comparison of the three materials we offer.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

Resin Code #2

The most common material for plastic pallets. HDPE offers the best all-around performance across temperature ranges, chemical environments, and load types. Its slight flexibility absorbs impact without cracking, making it ideal for environments where pallets are handled roughly.

Temp Range-40F to 180F
Density0.941 - 0.965 g/cm3
Impact ResistanceExcellent
Chemical ResistanceExcellent
RigidityModerate — slight flex under load
FDA CompliantYes
UV ResistanceGood (UV-stabilized formulations available)
Cost LevelModerate
Best For: General purpose, cold storage, food & beverage, pharmaceutical

PP (Polypropylene)

Resin Code #5

Polypropylene offers superior rigidity and high-temperature performance. It is the material of choice when pallets need to survive autoclaving at 250F or hot washdown environments. However, PP becomes brittle below freezing, so it is not suitable for frozen food applications.

Temp Range32F to 250F
Density0.895 - 0.920 g/cm3
Impact ResistanceGood (brittle below 32F)
Chemical ResistanceVery Good
RigidityHigh — very stiff under load
FDA CompliantYes
UV ResistanceFair (degrades without UV stabilizer)
Cost LevelModerate to High
Best For: High-temperature environments, autoclave, pharmaceutical, cleanrooms

Recycled HDPE Blend

Resin Code #2 (recycled)

Made from post-consumer and post-industrial recycled HDPE. These pallets offer an economical entry point into plastic pallets while supporting sustainability goals. The recycled content means they cannot be used for direct food contact applications, but they perform well for general shipping and warehousing.

Temp Range-10F to 130F
Density0.935 - 0.960 g/cm3
Impact ResistanceGood
Chemical ResistanceGood
RigidityModerate
FDA CompliantNo (not for direct food contact)
UV ResistanceFair
Cost LevelLow to Moderate
Best For: Export, one-way shipping, general warehousing, cost-sensitive applications
Chemical Compatibility

Chemical Resistance Chart

Plastic pallets are frequently exposed to chemicals in manufacturing, processing, and cleaning environments. This chart shows the resistance of HDPE and PP to 12 common industrial chemicals. Always verify specific chemical compatibility for your application.

Cleaning & Sanitation

Cleaning Protocols by Application

One of the biggest advantages of plastic pallets is their cleanability. Unlike porous wood, plastic surfaces can be thoroughly washed, sanitized, and even autoclaved. Here are the recommended cleaning protocols for different environments.

Standard Washdown

Frequency: After each use cycle or as needed

Method

Pressure wash with hot water (140-180F) and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow to air dry or use forced air for faster turnaround.

Suitable For

General warehousing, retail distribution, manufacturing

Important Notes

Most plastic pallets can be cleaned effectively with hot water pressure washing alone. Detergent is optional for light soiling. Avoid water temperatures above 200F for HDPE pallets.

Food-Grade Sanitizing

Frequency: Before each use in food contact applications

Method

Pressure wash with hot water and FDA-approved food-grade sanitizer (quaternary ammonium or peracetic acid). Rinse with potable water. Air dry in a clean environment to prevent re-contamination.

Suitable For

Food processing, beverage manufacturing, dairy, bakeries

Important Notes

FDA-compliant pallets must be cleaned with FDA-approved sanitizers only. Document cleaning dates and sanitizer concentrations for FSMA audit compliance. Sanitize within 4 hours of use in food contact applications.

Pharmaceutical GMP Cleaning

Frequency: Before each use, documented per SOP

Method

Clean with validated pharmaceutical-grade cleaning agents per facility SOP. Rinse with purified water. Visually inspect under controlled lighting. Document cleaning with lot number, date, operator, and cleaning agent batch.

Suitable For

Pharmaceutical manufacturing, compounding pharmacies, API handling

Important Notes

GMP cleaning requires validated procedures documented in facility SOPs. Each cleaning event must be recorded with full traceability. Use only cleaning agents listed in your facility validation documentation.

Autoclave Sterilization

Frequency: As required by application

Method

Place polypropylene pallets in autoclave at 250F (121C) and 15 PSI for minimum 20 minutes. Allow to cool before handling. Verify sterilization with biological indicators.

Suitable For

Cleanrooms, pharmaceutical sterile areas, medical device manufacturing

Important Notes

Only polypropylene (PP) pallets can withstand autoclave temperatures. HDPE pallets will warp or melt in an autoclave. Verify your specific pallet model is rated for autoclave use before attempting sterilization.

Calculate Your Return on Investment

Plastic pallets cost more upfront but save money over their lifetime. Use these benchmark numbers to estimate your ROI when switching from wood to plastic pallets.

Wood Pallet (Recycled Grade B)

Purchase Price$8 per pallet
Average Trips Before Failure4 trips
Cost Per Trip$2.00
Annual Pallets Needed (1,000 trips)250 pallets
Annual Pallet Spend$2,000
Disposal / Recycling Cost$0.50 per pallet
Total Annual Cost (1,000 trips)$2,125

Plastic Pallet (Stackable HDPE)

Purchase Price$45 per pallet
Average Trips Before Failure80 trips
Cost Per Trip$0.56
Annual Pallets Needed (1,000 trips)13 pallets
Annual Pallet Spend$585
Disposal / Recycling Cost$0 (recyclable)
Total Annual Cost (1,000 trips)$585

Annual Savings: $1,540 per 1,000 Trips
