Wood Species Comparison Guide
The type of wood in your pallet directly affects its weight, strength, durability, and cost. Understanding the differences between pallet wood species helps you choose the right product for your specific application.
Southern Yellow Pine (SYP)
SoftwoodThe workhorse of the pallet industry. Southern Yellow Pine accounts for the majority of new pallet lumber in the United States. It offers an excellent balance of strength, weight, and cost. SYP accepts heat treatment well and holds fasteners securely. It is the default choice for general-purpose pallets.
Oak (Red & White)
HardwoodOak is the gold standard for heavy-duty pallet applications. Its high density and hardness make it ideal for pallets carrying 3,000+ pound loads. Oak pallets are heavier, which increases freight costs, but they last significantly longer than softwood alternatives. Many recycled pallets contain a mix of oak and other hardwoods.
Maple (Hard & Soft)
HardwoodMaple offers excellent shock resistance and is less prone to splitting than oak. It is commonly found in recycled hardwood pallet mixes. Soft maple is lighter and more affordable than hard maple while still providing superior strength compared to softwoods.
SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir)
Softwood MixSPF is a grading category that includes several softwood species commonly sold together. It is lighter than Southern Yellow Pine and less expensive, making it popular for lightweight pallets and applications where minimizing freight weight is important. SPF is slightly less durable than SYP but works well for standard loads.
Mixed Hardwood Blend
Hardwood MixMost recycled pallets contain a mix of hardwood species including oak, maple, birch, ash, and elm. This blend offers a balance of strength and affordability. The exact species mix varies by region and availability, but the structural performance is consistent because all hardwoods exceed the strength thresholds required for standard pallet applications.
Heat Treatment & ISPM-15 Certification
International Phytosanitary Measure No. 15 (ISPM-15) is a global standard that requires all wood packaging materials used in international trade to be treated to prevent the spread of invasive insects and plant diseases.
Our heat treatment (HT) process heats the core of the wood to a minimum of 56 degrees Celsius (132.8 degrees Fahrenheit) for at least 30 continuous minutes. Each treated pallet receives the internationally recognized HT stamp and our facility registration number.
If you are shipping goods to Canada, Mexico, the European Union, or any other trading partner, ISPM-15 compliance is mandatory. We can heat-treat any pallet size in our inventory — turnaround is typically 24-48 hours.
Methyl bromide fumigation (MB) was once the primary treatment method, but it has been phased out in most countries due to its ozone-depleting properties. Heat treatment is now the globally preferred method because it is chemical-free, environmentally safe, and equally effective at eliminating pests. All of our treatment is heat-based — we do not use methyl bromide.
What Is Heat Treatment?
Heat treatment (HT) is the process of raising the core temperature of wood to 56C / 132.8F for a minimum of 30 minutes. This eliminates pests, larvae, and pathogens without the use of chemicals. It is the preferred treatment method worldwide and has replaced methyl bromide fumigation in most countries.
When Do You Need It?
- ✓Exporting goods to any country that enforces ISPM-15
- ✓Shipping to Canada or Mexico via land freight
- ✓Customer or buyer specifications require HT stamp
- ✓Food-grade or pharmaceutical supply chain requirements

Care & Storage Tips for Wood Pallets
Proper handling and storage extend the useful life of your wood pallets and reduce replacement costs. Follow these guidelines to get the maximum number of trips from every pallet.
Store on Paved Surfaces
Never store pallets directly on bare ground or soil. Moisture wicks up through the soil and into the bottom boards, causing rot, mold, and premature failure. Use concrete, asphalt, or gravel surfaces and elevate pallets on blocks if possible.
Protect from Direct Sun
Arizona sun dries out wood rapidly, causing splitting and cracking. Store pallets under shade structures, tarps, or inside whenever possible. UV exposure grays the wood surface within weeks and weakens the grain over months.
Control Stack Height
Limit empty pallet stacks to 6 pallets high for safety. For loaded pallets, follow the stacking guidelines for your specific load weight and pallet grade. Tall stacks on uneven surfaces are a tip-over hazard.
Rotate Your Inventory
Use a first-in, first-out (FIFO) rotation system. Pallets that sit for months deteriorate from UV, temperature cycling, and moisture exposure even in covered storage. Keep your pallet stock moving.
Inspect Before Reuse
Check pallets before each use for split boards, loose nails, broken stringers, and dimensional warping. A 30-second visual inspection prevents load failures that can damage thousands of dollars in product.
Repair Promptly
A cracked board or loose nail is a minor repair today but a pallet failure tomorrow. Keep basic repair supplies on hand — a hammer, pry bar, and a box of spiral pallet nails — and fix minor damage before pallets go back into rotation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Wood Pallets
Get answers to the most common questions about our recycled wood pallets, grading, sizing, delivery, and more.
What is the difference between Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C wood pallets?
Grade A pallets are in like-new condition with clean boards, no repairs, and exact dimensions. Grade B pallets are structurally sound with minor cosmetic wear and possibly 1-2 repaired boards. Grade C pallets are budget-friendly and show significant wear but remain structurally functional for standard loads. The grading follows National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA) standards.
Do you offer same-day pickup or delivery?
Yes. For standard in-stock sizes and grades, same-day pickup is available at our Goodyear, AZ facility during business hours. Same-day and next-day delivery is available for locations within the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. For large orders or locations outside the metro area, we typically deliver within 1-2 business days.
What is ISPM-15 and when do I need it?
ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is a global regulation that requires wood packaging materials used in international trade to be heat-treated or fumigated to prevent the spread of invasive insects. You need ISPM-15 compliant pallets if you are exporting goods to any country, including Canada and Mexico. Our heat treatment process raises wood core temperature to 56 degrees Celsius for 30+ minutes, and each pallet is stamped with our official ISPM-15 certification mark.
Can recycled pallets be used with automated handling systems?
Grade A recycled pallets are generally compatible with automated systems including conveyor lines, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), and robotic palletizers. However, automated systems are sensitive to dimensional variation. We recommend plastic pallets or custom-built pallets for the most demanding automated applications. Contact us to discuss your system specifications and we will recommend the best option.
How many pallets can I fit on a standard truck?
A standard 48-foot flatbed trailer can carry approximately 20 standard 48x40 GMA pallets in a single layer (floor loaded). Stacked two-high, that is 40 pallets. A 53-foot enclosed trailer can typically carry 22-24 pallets per layer. For a full truckload of empty pallets stacked for transport, a 53-foot trailer can hold approximately 400-500 recycled wood pallets depending on how they are loaded.
Do you buy back used pallets?
Yes. We operate a pallet recycling and buyback program. If you have used pallets accumulating at your facility, we will pick them up and pay you based on the condition and quantity. We accept all standard sizes. This program turns your pallet waste into revenue and keeps reusable materials out of landfills. Contact us for current buyback pricing.
What is the weight of a standard 48x40 recycled wood pallet?
A standard 48x40 GMA recycled wood pallet typically weighs between 35 and 45 pounds depending on the wood species and moisture content. Hardwood pallets (oak, maple) are on the heavier end at 40-50 pounds. Softwood pallets (pine, spruce, fir) are lighter at 30-40 pounds. If pallet weight is a concern for your freight costs, we can source lighter softwood options or recommend plastic pallets which weigh 15-30 pounds.
How should I store wood pallets outdoors?
If pallets must be stored outside, stack them off the ground on concrete blocks or a paved surface to prevent moisture absorption from soil contact. Limit stack height to 6 pallets for safety. Cover stacks with tarps or pallet covers to protect from rain and direct UV exposure. In Arizona, sun damage is a bigger concern than rain — prolonged UV exposure will gray and dry out the wood, leading to splitting and reduced lifespan. Whenever possible, store pallets in a covered area.
