Cold chain logistics — the unbroken chain of temperature-controlled storage and transportation from producer to consumer — is one of the most demanding segments of the supply chain. The pallets used in cold chain environments must perform under conditions that would destroy ordinary packaging: sub-zero temperatures, high humidity, frequent washdowns, and strict regulatory scrutiny. Choosing the wrong pallet for cold chain applications can compromise product safety, violate regulations, and result in costly product losses.

Why Cold Chain Pallets Are Different

Cold chain environments impose unique stresses on pallets. Freezer storage (typically -10 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit) causes moisture in wood to freeze and expand, potentially cracking boards and loosening nails. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles accelerate this damage. High humidity in coolers promotes mold growth on untreated wood. Regular sanitization with water and chemicals subjects pallets to constant moisture exposure. And food safety regulations require that pallets not harbor bacteria, pests, or contaminants that could affect products.

Wood Pallets in the Cold Chain

Wood pallets are widely used in cold chain logistics, particularly for cooler storage (34-40 degrees Fahrenheit) where conditions are less extreme than freezers. Heat-treated wood pallets are preferred because the treatment process reduces initial moisture content, which minimizes freeze damage. For food applications, pallets must be heat-treated to ISPM-15 standards regardless of whether they cross international borders — it is a food safety best practice, not just a trade regulation.

Key considerations for wood pallets in cold chain include selecting kiln-dried lumber with low initial moisture content, inspecting for mold before placing pallets in service (even small amounts of mold can contaminate food products), and using pallets with smooth surfaces and flush nails to prevent product packaging tears.

Plastic Pallets in the Cold Chain

Plastic pallets offer significant advantages in cold chain environments. They do not absorb moisture, resist mold and bacterial growth, withstand repeated washdowns without degradation, and maintain consistent dimensions through temperature fluctuations. For deep-freeze applications and pharmaceutical cold chains, plastic pallets are often the required choice.

However, some plastic formulations become brittle at very low temperatures. Ensure that any plastic pallet used in freezer applications is rated for the specific temperature range of your storage environment. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pallets generally perform well down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hygiene Standards and Food Safety

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires that all elements of the food supply chain — including pallets — be managed to prevent contamination. For pallet users, this means implementing a pallet inspection program that checks for contamination, mold, and structural damage. Segregating food-grade pallets from general-use pallets prevents cross-contamination. Using pallets from suppliers with documented quality control processes ensures consistency. Proper documentation of pallet sourcing and handling provides traceability in case of a food safety incident.

Best Practices for Cold Chain Pallet Management

  • Inspect all pallets before introducing them to cold chain environments.
  • Reject pallets with visible mold, chemical stains, or structural damage.
  • Rotate pallet inventory to prevent extended exposure to extreme conditions.
  • Allow frozen pallets to acclimate before stacking heavy loads (frozen wood is brittle).
  • Work with suppliers who understand cold chain requirements and provide appropriately treated pallets.
