If you operate in the North American supply chain, the 48-inch by 40-inch pallet is likely the foundation of your logistics. This size accounts for approximately 35% of all new pallets manufactured in the United States and an even higher percentage of recycled pallets in circulation. But how did one particular size come to dominate an industry, and why does that matter for your business?

The Origin of the GMA Pallet

GMA stands for Grocery Manufacturers Association (now known as the Consumer Brands Association). In the 1960s, the grocery industry recognized that a lack of pallet standardization was creating massive inefficiency. Manufacturers, distributors, and retailers were all using different pallet sizes, creating compatibility problems at every handoff point. Loading docks could not be optimized. Truck space was wasted. Racking systems required constant adjustment.

The GMA commissioned engineering studies to determine the optimal pallet size for the U.S. grocery supply chain. The key constraints were the interior width of standard truck trailers (96 inches), the dimensions of common grocery cases, forklift compatibility, and storage efficiency in typical warehouse racking. The answer was 48 inches by 40 inches: two pallets placed 48 inches across fit the 96-inch trailer width perfectly, and the 40-inch depth optimized trailer length utilization.

Why Standardization Matters

Logistics Efficiency

When every pallet in a supply chain is the same size, every truck, every dock, every rack, and every piece of material handling equipment can be optimized for that one size. This eliminates the need for adjustable equipment, reduces errors in load planning, and maximizes space utilization across the entire network. The economic value of this standardization is estimated in the billions of dollars annually.

Interoperability

Standard pallets can move seamlessly between companies. A manufacturer loads products onto GMA pallets, ships them to a distributor who stores them in GMA- sized racking, then ships to a retailer whose equipment also handles GMA pallets. No one needs to repalletize, adjust equipment, or waste time accommodating non-standard sizes. This interoperability is the silent engine of supply chain efficiency.

Cost Benefits

Because the GMA pallet is produced in such enormous volumes, it benefits from economies of scale that make it the cheapest pallet per unit to manufacture and purchase. The recycled market amplifies this advantage — the ubiquity of the 48x40 size means recyclers like USA Pallet Recycle always have deep inventory, keeping prices low and availability high. Try to buy a non-standard size in volume and you will quickly appreciate the cost advantage of standardization.

GMA Pallet Specifications

The standard GMA pallet has specific construction requirements: three stringers (two outer, one center), seven top deck boards, five bottom deck boards, a total weight of approximately 40-48 lbs (depending on lumber species), dynamic load capacity of approximately 2,800 lbs, static load capacity of approximately 6,000 lbs, and racking capacity of approximately 2,200 lbs. When GMA Is Not the Right Choice

Despite its dominance, the GMA pallet is not ideal for every application. Industries with specific product dimensions that do not fit the 48x40 footprint efficiently (such as 55-gallon drums, which are better served by 48x48 pallets) may benefit from alternative sizes. International supply chains interfacing with European logistics may need Euro pallets (800x1200mm). And custom applications with unique dimensional or structural requirements will always exist. But for the vast majority of domestic operations, the GMA pallet is the standard for good reason.
